Coverack Films – Tuesday 17 September 2019 – Fisherman’s Friends

FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS (12)

A real feel good film of the ‘true’ story of ten shanty singing Cornish fishermen hitting the big time.  A ‘must see’ for residents and visitors alike.

A fast-living, cynical London music executive (Danny Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he’s pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate ‘fish out of water’ as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he’s drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he’s forced to re-evaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means.

“Fisherman’s Friends is a thoroughly amiable and upbeat British
comedy with a flavour of Ealing Studios and The Full
Monty about it. “

LATE NIGHT (15)

A comedy/drama set in the entertainment industry, starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling.

Legendary talk-show host Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is a pioneer in her field. She keeps her writers’ room on a short leash – and all male. But when her ratings plummet and she is accused of being a “woman who hates women,” Katherine puts gender equality on her to-do list and impulsively hires Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling), a chemical plant efficiency expert, as the first and only female on her writing staff.

“Thompson delivers a memorable performance as the abrasive
“cold witch,” as someone describes her as a delightfully wicked
woman of power. “

YESTERDAY (12)

A joyous film directed by Danny Boyle with plenty of Beatles hits belted out!

Jack Malik is a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie. After a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed… and he finds himself with a very complicated problem, indeed.

“A glowing tribute to The Beatles and their music, this is both a

scathing look at how we get things wrong. “
